For the second time HAL has collected Christmas gifts for deprived children in London, to be distributed by Kids Company, one of the charities HAL is supporting this year. The charity says:
“ A family struggling to cope with day to day existence is unable to provide a Christmas meal, let alone presents and party games. It doesn’t have to be that way, and with your support, we can really make a difference. Last year we hosted a spectacular Christmas day for over 2000 children who would otherwise have gone without. This year, we expect even more. We provide games, activities, a Christmas lunch and each child goes home with individually wrapped gifts.”

It’s the end of term! The Reading Partners at English Martyrs Primary School in Tower Hamlets enjoyed Christmas festivities and carol singing, and our mentors working with secondary school pupils in Hackney have successfully completed their first term of mentoring sessions. Happy holidays everyone.
November
Six volunteers met their reading partners at English Martyrs Primary School in Tower Hamlets and started enjoying a regular lunchtime reading session. This is the second year HAL has volunteered at English Martyrs and last year’s volunteers, who were delighted to meet up with their reading partners again, are joined by some new faces who have been inspired by the original team.

Once again HAL staff proved their cake-baking expertise for the Macmillan Cancer Research Coffee Morning, and this year the event collected donations of £1,350 for the charity.

This summer HAL is welcoming an intern from the City Business Traineeship scheme run by the Citylink Brokerage in association with the Lloyd’s Market. This is the third year that HAL has participated in the scheme and we are delighted to continue to support it.

A team of HAL volunteers returned to Hackney City Farm to muck in with the mucking out and spent a happy and exhausting day cleaning out the chicken coops, bagging manure, watering the gardens, and improving the paddocks.
April
HAL volunteers swapped suits for trainers and lent a hand – and their sporting expertise - at the Lloyd’s Community Programme’s Winter Neighbourhood Games. The Games gives children in Tower Hamlets the chance to compete against each other in a number of team and individual sports, and try out sports they might not normally encounter.

For the third year running HAL is collecting Christmas cards received by staff, in support of the Woodland Trust’s Christmas Card Recycling Scheme.
Recycling cards with the Woodland Trust:
· Reduces the number of trees felled for paper production;
· Reduces landfill and greenhouse gas emissions;
· Generates money from recycling credits which the Trust spends on planting more woodland.
The more cards recycled, the more money they receive and the more trees are planted.
Over the 14 years that the scheme has been running the Woodland Trust has recycled 15,000 tonnes of cards and planted approximately 200,000 trees. Due to the superb increase in local council recycling facilities, this is the last year that the scheme will run. HAL is proud to have supported the Woodland Trust in its work and will continue to recycle paper and cardboard (as well as glass, plastic bottles, cans, plastic cups, batteries, staples, and IT equipment).
