Texas wildfires affect over 1.25 million acres

Texas is battling a series of active wildfires.

The "Smokehouse Creek" fire located in the Texas Panhandle area (between New Mexico and Oklahoma) has affected over 1m acres making it the second largest wildfire on record in the US and the largest ever in Texas. The "Smokehouse Creek" fire has 15% containment; two other fires "Windy Deuce" and "Grape Vine Creek" fires have in the main been contained - see Texas A&M website here. Some of the fires have now crossed over to Oklahoma. Map available here.

The fires have so far apparently destroyed 500 homes and caused the evacuation of 6,500 residents but as the events are still unfolding these numbers may be out of date and no estimates for insured losses is available.
